Before the Saturn came out, Sega said that it would be downwards compatible with Genesis games. They lied.
They said the same thing for Dreamcast also I believe, they said it way back in its early development stages.
I believe Nintendo said they would make the N64 downwards compatible with SNES games. They lied.

So how can we actually put trust into Sony with the PS2? They may just be blowing smoke so we continue to buy PS games....

I want proof that they won't jerk this feature out of the PS2 just before it comes out.

i never heard sega mention the dreamcast was going to be backward compatible, this also goes for the N64!! Sony however officially announced their system will be backwards compatible with PSX hardware/software, so quit worrying, otherwise they will be sued for false advertising!

Sony Announced That it will be backwards compatible several times. Sony is a respectable company and you both should trust them because they have onto paper and the Japanese version has the capability. THERE IS YOUR PROOF!!!!!
